Blank Space: Embracing Creative Freedom

  • Design professionals often face a common hurdle – the fear of a blank canvas. This fear can stifle creativity and lead designers to prioritize execution over exploration. In response to this challenge, Dropbox, a design-focused organization, wanted to create a unique event for its annual design summit with a theme reflecting a clear mission: to craft an experience that empowers creatives to conquer their fear of the Blank Space, embrace new ideas, and reignite their creative spark.

  • Create an experience that empowers designers to overcome their fear of the blank page, embrace experimentation, and rediscover their creative freedom.

  • The event's core concept was "boundless exploration." This manifested in every aspect of the design, from the logo to the event space itself.

The logo embodied fluidity and exploration. The letters were designed to move freely, avoiding any rigid structure. A softer color palette and a subtle text blend created a sense of vastness and openness, inviting exploration and experimentation. The overall tone evoked a meditative and ethereal atmosphere, encouraging creative flow rather than forced creation. The use of metal and glass in installations and badges reflects the surrounding environment of Palm Springs, reinforcing the sense of boundlessness while remaining unobtrusive.

Instead of traditional titles, badges used "Adobe Creative Types" to categorize participants by creative personalities (e.g., Visionary, Dreamer, etc.) fostering deeper connections and embracing a broader spectrum of creative thinking beyond roles. This encourages individuals to explore and express their unique creative identity. Each creative type had a unique color, adding a visual layer to the diverse group of participants.

Badges featured a minimal, typographic layout printed on reflective metallic glass. The material choice, while seemingly solid, reflected the surrounding environment, reinforcing the event's emphasis on boundlessness.

Ethereal white curtains billow like a soft breeze, framing the fluid Blank Space logo on the stage.

This graphic visual metaphor depicts the journey of creation in a simple and clean way. It graphically represents how our initial "thoughts" evolve into tangible "things." The graphic language emphasizes the clear progression from idea to form, conveying the essence of the creative process.

To darken the projection room, we created window clings featuring the "Blank Space" logo animation. The clings showcased the letters progressively "exploring the canvas" before forming the final logo across four separate pieces. A sunrise-like gradient across the clings enhanced the sense of progression and exploration.

Guests were greeted by a mirrored entryway displaying the message "Thoughts Become Things." The reflections served a dual purpose: reinforcing the summit's theme of turning ideas into reality and encouraging participants to see themselves as active creators.
