Skin Hunger:
Reconnecting Humans Through Touch

  • Nokia struggles to break into the US smartphone market. While nostalgia exists, questions linger about their relevance in the modern era.

  • We need to understand what kind of connection people truly crave in a world dominated by digital interactions. Is it just connecting people, or is there a deeper human need at play?

  • Looking at trends in fashion, art, and even movies, I noticed a growing desire for real, physical connection. This sparked an idea: how could technology bridge this gap and help us connect on a deeper, more human level?

  • I led the research, identified cultural trends, and designed a brand experience that aligns with Nokia's core value of connection.

Research: A World Craving Contact

Our research revealed a cultural shift with manifestations of Interlocking and Touch. Despite being surrounded by technology, people yearn for more intimacy and touch.

This "Skin Hunger" shows up in different ways:
Fashion: Clothes with soft textures are back in style.
Movies: Films like ‘Five Feet Apart’ explore themes of loneliness and the need for touch.
Pop Culture: The "pretzel" emoji (legs intertwined) shows a desire for non-sexual closeness.
Even "Cuddle Parties" are a thing!

Observation: The Disconnect

  • Touchless Interaction: Voice-controlled assistants and research into touchless phone controls further isolate us from physical contact.

  • Crowded Loneliness: Commuting with strangers, all glued to our screens, highlights the paradox of being surrounded by people yet feeling utterly alone.

Current technology trends seem to be moving in the opposite direction

Insight: From Connecting People to Connecting Human

A gap was identified between what people truly crave (touch) and the direction technology is headed.

This led us to the core insight:

True connection goes beyond people;
it's about connecting the human within us.

Brand Solution - An Experience Powered by Touch

Imagine an intimate experience by Nokia that bridges this gap.

Here's how it works:

  • To communicate, participants simply touch balloons of the same color.

  • Messages are transmitted through touch/vibrations, similar to a childhood game of writing on someone's back.

  • The balloons communicate wirelessly, creating a captivating and interactive experience.

This simple yet powerful installation reminds us that in a world increasingly focused on the virtual, the human need for touch remains paramount. Nokia aims to bridge this gap, fostering real connections through a touch-based experience.

Reconnecting what truly matters.
